Bodhidharma decided to leave India to preach the precepts of the Buddha in the kingdom of the Wei, in northern China, becoming the legendary first patriarch and founder of Zen Buddhism. According to a legend, it was he who discovered how the energizing effects of tea helped him stay awake during his long meditation sessions.
