Hotei was a semi-legendary Zen monk very popular in China and Southeast Asia.

In Japan he is one of the “seven gods of fortune” and is considered the god of happiness and abundance, as well as fortune tellers and innkeepers. He has a cheerful, benevolent, and kind temperament, and is always ready to carry women and children across rivers on his back if necessary.
